Every recommendation comes from first-hand experience and every photograph was taken during my visit.

Beyond the Blue Streets of Chefchaouen

Most visitors know Chefchaouen for its famous blue streets, but just forty-five minutes away lies Akchour, one of Morocco's most rewarding hiking destinations. Crystal-clear rivers, limestone cliffs and lush woodland replace the busy medina, creating an entirely different side of northern Morocco.

Choosing the Right Base

We stayed at Auberge Dardara, a peaceful countryside guesthouse surrounded by gardens. A traditional breakfast prepared with fresh local ingredients provided the perfect start before driving to Akchour.

The Drive

The journey from Chefchaouen winds through beautiful Rif Mountain scenery. Having our own hire car meant we could leave early, avoid the crowds and stop whenever the scenery deserved another photograph.

The Hike Begins

Arriving early at the hydroelectric dam gives you the trail almost to yourself. Head towards the Grand Cascade first while your legs are fresh. Within minutes the path follows the emerald river across rustic wooden bridges and stepping stones.

Looking down over the emerald river as the trail winds deeper into Akchour's spectacular gorge.

From here, the trail becomes even more spectacular, revealing crystal-clear pools, rustic wooden bridges and some of the finest mountain scenery in the Rif Mountains.

Following the Emerald River

Leaving the dam behind, the trail follows the crystal-clear river upstream. Around every corner another waterfall appears while the river winds through smooth limestone rocks. The journey becomes a series of discoveries rather than a simple climb.

The emerald pools of Akchour are among the most beautiful natural landscapes in northern Morocco.

Crystal Clear Water

The river constantly changes between shades of turquoise, emerald and deep green. Although the Grand Cascade is the destination, the journey itself is just as rewarding. Take your time and enjoy the scenery.

Wooden Bridges and River Crossings

Wooden bridges, stepping stones and shallow crossings appear throughout the route. Good footwear is essential, especially after rain.

Wildlife

Keep an eye on the trees for Barbary macaques. We were fortunate enough to see several moving through the forest canopy. Observe them from a respectful distance and never feed them.

Reaching the Grand Cascade

As the trail continues to wind upstream, the gorge grows narrower and the landscape becomes even more dramatic. The sound of water is constant now, bouncing off the cliffs and echoing through the valley as the route pushes deeper into the Rif Mountains.

After the gentler beginning of the walk, the final approach to the Grand Cascade feels like a reward. The river quickens, the rocks become slicker and the forest thickens around the path. Every few minutes there is another reason to stop and look up, whether it is a pocket of sunlight on the cliffs or a burst of green from the trees above.

Travel Tip: Start early and allow time to linger at the waterfall. The trail is far more enjoyable when you are not watching the clock.

Lunch Beside the River

One of the most memorable parts of Akchour is the chance to stop for lunch at one of the small riverside cafés. These simple open-air spots sit directly beside the water, with tables and chairs placed on stone ledges or in shallow sections of the river itself.

After several hours of walking, taking off your boots and letting your feet cool in the mountain water is a luxury in its own right. A tagine cooked over a wood fire, fresh bread and a glass of mint tea feel especially satisfying when served in such an extraordinary setting.

It is not a fine-dining experience, but that is exactly the point. It is relaxed, unpolished and completely tied to the landscape around it. For a visit to Akchour, that sense of authenticity is part of the charm.

💡 Did You Know? Akchour is one of the best places in northern Morocco to combine hiking with a leisurely riverside lunch, making it ideal for a full day trip.

God's Bridge

If the Grand Cascade is the emotional high point of the hike, God's Bridge is the visual one. The natural arch is enormous, rising above the gorge like something carved from another world. Seen from below, the scale of it is unforgettable.

The lower trail gives you the most dramatic perspective because you are standing deep in the canyon while the bridge spans high overhead. The red and orange rock faces contrast beautifully with the green of the river and the trees, especially in the clear mountain light.

This is the moment where Akchour feels at its most spectacular. The landscape opens and closes around you at the same time: a narrow gorge, a wide sky and a natural formation that seems almost impossible until you are standing beneath it.

📷 Photography Tip: If possible, take your God's Bridge photographs from a slightly lower angle so the height and scale of the arch feel more impressive.

Before You Go

  • Wear proper hiking shoes with good grip.
  • Bring cash for cafés, parking and any snacks you want along the route.
  • Carry more water than you think you need, especially in warmer months.
  • Start early to avoid the hottest part of the day and to enjoy the trail before it gets busy.
  • Respect the wildlife and never feed the Barbary macaques.
  • Allow a full day if you want to complete both hikes without rushing.

My Verdict

Akchour is one of the most rewarding day hikes in northern Morocco because it offers so much variety in a single trip. You begin close to Chefchaouen, follow the river through a lush gorge, pause at cafés by the water, reach the Grand Cascade and finally stand beneath God's Bridge. It is scenic, atmospheric and full of those small moments that stay with you long after the hike is over.

If you only have one day to explore beyond Chefchaouen's blue streets, Akchour is an excellent choice. If you have the time, doing both trails in one day gives you the most complete experience.
